How the marks work

Everything you do is written into the file itself as plain text, so anyone can see it in any editor. Five marks are standard CriticMarkup; the last two are this tool's own.

Addition{++ … ++}
Rollout finished {++two days early++}.
Words you typed that were not there before.
Deletion{-- … --}
The {--legacy --}proxy was retired.
Words you deleted while editing. Removing a whole passage with X writes one too, followed by your reason as a comment.
Substitution{~~ old ~> new ~~}
Latency fell by {~~half~>39%~~}.
Words you replaced: the original, then what you put instead.
Comment{>> … <<}
Costs fell 16%.{>> iain: check against the invoice <<}
A note attached to the text before it. Also used for the reason a passage was removed.
Highlight{== … ==}{>> … <<}
Decommission on {==1 October==}{>> iain: or 15th? <<}.
Words you picked out, with your comment on them.
Skipped{!! … !!}This tool
{!!The rollback plan is unchanged.!!}
A passage you moved past without owning it. Nobody has vouched for it.
Ownership{@@ who time sha256 @@}This tool
{@@ iain 2026-10-01T14:05:12Z sha256:c930c5… @@}
You own everything above this line except skipped passages. The hash covers those words, so a later change above it shows the mark is out of date.

Editing

Press E or click into a passage and edit it as ordinary text. When you save, your version is compared with the original words and the additions, deletions and substitutions are written for you. Edit the same passage again and the marks are rewritten against the original, so they never pile up; put a word back and its mark disappears.

To comment, select some words in the editor and press Comment: they are highlighted and your note is attached. With nothing selected, the comment goes at the cursor.

What each file keeps

Plain markdown is the text as it now reads: additions and substitutions applied, deleted and removed text gone, comments and every other mark dropped. With ownership marks keeps every mark, so a colleague can see what changed, what was skipped and who owns it.
